Shown here is the SR-4050 Squat Rack from Rep Fitness as an example.

It is an exceptionally well built product (check the feedback on reddit), and has all the essential features we look for in the best squat stand or rack for a garage gym.

We’re going to highlight products from Rep Fitness. They make high quality gear – at bargain prices.

Rep Fitness are the “bang for the buck” champions of barbell equipment – and we’re really looking forward to their Black Friday sale for 2019.

Rep Fitness Squat Rack SR-4050 The SR-4050 is a squat stand with some unexpected features. Of course it's great for barbell exercises with plastic lined j-cups and safeties, but it also has band pegs, two choices of pull-up bar, and dip handles! The SR-4050 is 94" tall - which is great for garages with a low ceiling.
Rep Fitness Squat Rack SR-4000 The SR-4000 has all the great features of the 4050 - but is available in a taller 110" height. It is sturdy thanks to the wide base and 11 gauge 2.5" steel, but has weight pegs in the back for extra stability.
Rep Fitness Folding Squat Rack PR-4100 Need the ultimate in space savings? The PR-4100 is a wall mounted, folding rack. You can fold flat for a minimum of space. But it still provides a variety of workout options.

The Squat Rack – What To Look For

What do you need in a squat rack?

First of all, let’s clarify. We’re going to talk about squat racks also known as squat stands.

These typically consist of two posts – and a wide base to stay sturdy.

(But we’ll also look at a hybrid option too – because the space savings are so compelling.)

First of all, it’s got to have adjustable height j-cups to hold the barbell.

Best if they are plastic lined – so you don’t mess up the knurl on that expensive barbell.

Secondly – you really need Spotter Arms if at all possible.

Rep Fitness SR-4000 Squat Rack - dip handles and band pegs are an unexpected bonus
Spotter arms let you do a variety of exercises alone, in safety.

These let you do any number of barbell exercises safely – even when training alone.

Don’t take a risk by dumping a fully loaded barbell of your back at the bottom of a squat – just get some spotter arms and be smart about it!

A stand alone squat stand needs to be sturdy. Look for 11 gauge steel – that’s the industry standard for this kind of gear.

A wide base, weight pegs, and that heavy steel will all help to ensure you don’t have to anchor the unit to the floor.

But, that is an option too – look for a model with pre-drilled mounting holes.

We highly recommend a chinning or pull-up bar too. Let’s talk about that next.

Pull-Ups and Chin-Ups – Excellent Exercise

Don’t miss out on one of the simplest and most effective exercises – the pull-up (or chin-up).

Equip your squat or power rack with a pull-up bar and you can use a wide range of exercises including: pull-ups, chin-ups, hangs, leg raises, etc.

Rep Fitness PR-4100 Folding Rack
Having a pull-up bar on your squat rack makes a world of difference.

Being able to do these exercises is really one of the huge benefits of a rack.

We personally don’t recommend the “kipping” style of pull-ups – unless your rack is securely anchored to the floor. But, that’s OK – the strict version of pull-ups is a far better choice for nearly everyone.

Let’s look at what Rep Fitness has to offer.

SR-4050 Squat Rack from Rep Fitness – Black Friday

The SR-4050 Squat Rack is a great budget option.

Rep Fitness SR-4050 Squat Rack - specifications
Specifications for the Rep Fitness 4050 Squat Rack.

It’s 94" – that’s just under 8′ – so it should fit in any garage. (If your garage ceiling is even lower than that – I don’t know what to tell you – maybe it’s time to move?)

Made from 11 gauge 2.5″ x 2.5″ steel – it’s rated to hold 1,000 lbs.

That’s probably more than enough for you – I know it is for me.

It has UHMW lined J-Cups for your barbell. Don’t tear up the knurl on your barbells with anything less – you need catches that will protect the bar.

The spotter arms are also plastic lined. They are 24" long.

The spotter arms have band pegs that can double as dip handles.

This is a great feature – because the dip is an underutilized exercise for many trainees.

The only caveat is that you should counterweight the rack when doing heavy dips.

The dip handles will support up to 300 lbs.

Rep Fitness SR-4050 Squat Rack - it's even got dip handles!
The SR-4050 has safeties – but these also double as a way to mount dip handles.

With features for heavy barbell lifts, dips, bands, and pull-ups or chin-ups – this really is a great bargain option for your garage gym.

SR-4000 Squat Rack from Rep Fitness – Black Friday

Got more ceiling height to play with?

The SR-4000 Squat Rack may be a better option for you.

This is a 110" tall rack – that’s just over 9 feet.

That’ll make those pull-up bars easier to use – especially for tall people.

The SR-4000 is a 110" tall rack. It has all the great features you want – J-cups, safety arms, two pullup bars, dip handles, and band pegs.

Beyond that, the SR-4000 has all the great features of it’s little brother.

The band pegs, dip handles, plastic lined spotter arms, 1000 lb capacity – it’s all there.

The SR-4000 is a very cost effective unit – there’s no doubt about that.

The PR-4100 comes with a single 1.25″ diameter pull-up bar (which is the equivalent of the “skinny” pull-up bar we highlighted on the other models.)

The PR-4100 has some other neat bells and whistles too.

For instance, it has Westside 1″ hole spacing.

This is allows for very fine adjustments to the barbell height – right where you need it – in the “benching” zone.

Rep Fitness PR-4100 Folding Rack
Westside hole spacing – this let’s you fine tune the barbell height where it is most important.

For the most secure mounting, Rep recommends the use of wooden “stringers” – mount these across the studs in the wall – then mount the PR-4100 to these.

Rep Fitness PR-4100 Folding Rack
Wooden stringers are a cost effective option to ensure a strong wall mount. No need to buy these from Rep – use any wood you have available.

The Pull-Up bar can be easily removed for when it is time to store the unit.

Better still, it has a lot of options for expansion – which is part of the fun of customizing your power rack.

We’re going to highlight products from Rep Fitness. They make high quality gear – at bargain prices.

Rep Fitness are the “bang for the buck” champions of barbell equipment:

Rep Fitness Folding Power Rack PR-4100 Need the ultimate in space savings? The PR-4100 is a wall mounted, folding power rack. You can fold flat for a minimum of space. But it still provides a variety of workout options. Available in two depths 21.5@quot; and 41" deep.

The Power Rack – What To Look For

What do you need in a power rack?

First of all, let’s clarify. We’re going to talk about four post power racks.

These typically consist of four posts – and they are stand alone units.

If you need a more space efficient two post squat stand, Rep Fitness offers those as well.

One of the most important features of a power rack – how much weight can it support?

You’ll find lighter racks made from 14 gauge steel, and others made from 11 gauge steel.

The maximum weight rating is not something you are going to be able to upgrade later, so we recommend getting a solid foundation to build upon.

The height of the power rack is important – to ensure it will actually fit in your garage.

A taller rack will let tall guys do pull-ups and chin-ups – but may cost more.

Beyond that, look for quality accessories and attachments.

For example, the “J-Cups” that are used to hold the barbell should be lined with plastic.

This keeps the knurl on your expensive barbells looking (and feeling) good.

Some of the higher end power racks have an insane number of optional attachments.

But, the good thing is that you can start simple – and build upon it later.

Let’s look at what Rep Fitness has to offer.

PR-1100 Power Rack from Rep Fitness

The PR-1100 Power Rack is a great basic power rack.

This 14 gauge steel rack is rated for 700 lbs and comes with: multi-grip pull-up bar, UHMW (Plastic) lined J-Cups, numbered holes, and safety bars.

Rep Fitness PR-1100
Specifications for the Rep Fitness PR-1100 power rack. Most important: 83" height.

It is also expandable, as it is compatible with PR-1000 series attachments.

This includes weight horns (for storing weight plates), dip handles, lat pulldown/low row cable attachment, and a land mine accessory.

PR-1100 power rack
The PR-1100 rack is compatible with a variety of attachments and add-ons.

Speaking of customization, it is also available in a variety of colors – to let you customize the look of your home gym.

Rep Fitness PR-1100 Power Rack
The PR-1100 is available in a variety of colors; blue, silver, red, black, and matte black.

Let’s look at another option from Rep Fitness.

PR-1000 Power Rack from Rep Fitness

The PR-1000 Power Rack is a great starting point.

As you can see, this is a four post rack.

It is made from 14 gauge 2" x 2" steel, and is rated for 700 lbs maximum weight.

Rep Fitness PR-1000 Power Rack for the home
The PR-1000 – a 700 lb rated rack that let’s you start simple – and add more later.

The PR-1000 is 83" tall. That’s just under 7 feet tall.

If you need shorter, Rep has the PR-1050 Shorty Power Rack. It’s similar, but only 6 foot tall.

The PR-1000 has numbered uprights – so it is easy to set the J-Cups at the same height.

There is a pull-up bar – which is highly recommended of course.

The J-Cups are plastic lined, but the safety bars that extend through the cage are not.

That means you shouldn’t rack the bar on the safeties regularly – save them for emergency use only – otherwise it’s going to be hard on the knurl.

PR-1000 Power Racks
The PR-1000 is great for squats – and other heavy barbell exercises.

There are also several optional attachments you can add.

Shown below is the lat pulldown/low row attachment. Dip handles are also available.

Please note both of those are additional cost.

Rep Fitness PR-1000 Power Rack for the home
A Lat Pulldown attachment is available – but is additional cost.

Let’s look at more options from Rep Fitness.

PR-4000 Power Rack from Rep Fitness

This is where things start to get serious.

The PR-4000 Power Rack is commerical quality, and made from 11 gauge 3" x 3" steel.

As such, it has a weight rating of 1,000 lbs.

That’s enough for just about every garage trainee.

It is available in several colors, and raw clear coat.

PR-4000 Power Rack in blue
Hammertone Blue is one of several color options for the PR-4000 Power Rack.

But, where the PR-4000 really shines is the expandability. There are TONS of options.

All of these cost extra, of course.

If there is an attachment you want or need – they probably have it for the PR-4000.

PR-4000 Power Rack with land mine attachment
The PR-4000 supports an amazing variety of attachments.

Here’s just a few of the add-on options: lat pulldown/low row, dip handles, land mine, front foot extension, weight pegs for plate storage, spotter arms, leg rollers, band pegs, and much, much more.

Ok, maybe this is overwhelming.

Just remember, you start simple with just the rack, safety bars, and J-cups – and you add all the other stuff later.

The PR-4000 power rack supports many, many optional attachments.
The PR-4000 is a very expandable rack. The only limit is your budget.

The PR-4000 takes up quite a bit of room. Let’s look at an option that takes things in a different direction.

PR-4100 Folding Power Rack from Rep Fitness

The PR-4100 Folding Squat Rack / Power Rack takes space savings to a whole new level.

This is a FOLDING wall mounted power rack.

It combines the stability and safety of a full power rack – with compact storage.

The PR-4100 comes with a single 1.25″ diameter pull-up bar. It is height adjustable, and must be removed to be stowed. But, it is easy to put it on or take it off the rack.

The PR-4100 has some other neat bells and whistles too.

For instance, it has Westside 1″ hole spacing.

This is allows for very fine adjustments to the barbell height – right where you need it – in the “benching” zone.

For the most secure mounting, Rep recommends the use of wooden “stringers” – mount these across the studs in the wall – then mount the PR-4100 to these.

No need to buy an expensive metal string – just use wood of the appropriate length.

Connect these into the studs – and then attach the rack to the stringers.

PR-5000 Power Rack from Rep Fitness

We saved the best for last.

The PR-5000 Power Rack is the top of the line from Rep Fitness.

PR-5000 Power Rack
Colors and accessories galore – the PR-5000 is a commercial quality rack.

PR-5000 Power Rack

That should do it – if you can’t find a power rack in that bunch- I’m not sure what to tell you.

Power Racks from Rep Fitness – In Summary

A Power Rack is a must for heavy barbell training.

These units take up a lot of space – and don’t move easily.

But they offer a great variety of exercise variations – and safety.

We recommend a unit that is strong and sturdy but can be improved with additional accessories in the future.

That will help keep your gains from hitting a plateau – and keep your training fun and exciting.

Space constrained? There are models that fold flat for the ultimate in space saving storage.

By the way, picking up one or more of these items on Black Friday 2019 (and Cyber Monday 2019) is a great idea – as Black Friday is the best time of the year to buy fitness equipment.

The Olympic Barbell is the primary tool of strength training – and Olympic lifting.

With the 2″ sleeve diameter these bars accommodate the 18″ diameter Olympic plates.

Olympic barbells are made for serious weight – and they are heavy – weighing 20 kilos or 45 lbs – usually.

Rep Sabre Bar

Shown above is the Sabre Bar from Rep Fitness.

This is an example of a high quality, but affordable Olympic weightlifting barbell.

In this article, we’re going to review the barbells available from Rep Fitness:

Rep Fitness Basic Barbell This is an entry level barbell. The Rep Basic Barbell is meant for "slow lifts" like the squat, bench, and deadlift. If you are extremely restricted in budget this is your choice. But we'd recommend you look at a higher end model - as those will let you do Olympic lifting too.
Sabre Bar The Sabre Bar from Rep Fitness is a general purpose bushing bar - use it for powerlifting or Olympic lifts. Available with or without center knurl, and a 15 kg women's version is available too. (The men's bar weights 20kg.)
Sabre Bar (Black Zinc Finish) The Sabre Bar is also available in a Black Zinc finish. It looks nice.
Rep Gladiator WL Bearing Bar The Gladiator Bar is a bearing bar. That means it uses needles bearings and bushings to allow the sleeves to rotate. This will give exceptional spin that is beneficial for the Olympic lifts. This bar also has whip - which also helps. Available in 28mm diameter and 28.5mm diameters.
Rep Stainless Steel Gladiator WL Bar Rep's ultimate weightlifting bar is the Gladiator in Stainless Steel - this will be the ultimate in oxidation resistance.
Rep Stainless Steel Power Bar The Rep Power Bar is specialized for power lifting - that means a 29mm shaft diameter for no whip and center knurl to keep this bar secure on your back. It is made from Stainless Steel.

Basic Barbell from Rep Fitness

The Basic Barbell from Rep Fitness is just what it claims to be.

This is a no-frills Olympic sized barbell. And it’s probably the cheapest bar you are going to find.

But there are some important caveats to this.

First of all, it is Olympic sized – but it’s not made for Olympic lifts (clean, snatch, etc.)

Rep Basic Barbell
This is your "basic" barbell. It’s the right size for use with Olympic sized weight plates.

The shaft diameter on this bar is 30mm. That’s a lot.

That should mean it is nice and stiff – with minimal “whip”.

But it also means it will be a challenge to your grip when deadlifting.

(Although having said that, most “power bars” have a 29mm diameter.

Here’s some of the vital specs.

Rep Sabre Bar specifcations

The maximum weight capacity of this bar is 700 lbs.

This bar weighs 20 kilos (44 lbs.), which is what you’d expect from this type of barbell.

It has a rust-resistant zinc coating.

But this isn’t a very durable finish for a barbell.

It’s certainly going to show oxidation over time – and maybe quite a lot.

Basic Barbell from Rep Fitness - showing the bushings
The 2″ Sleeves are sized for for Olympic weight plates.

Sabre Bar from Rep Fitness

The Sabre Bar is an example of a general purpose barbell.

The Men’s version of this bar is 28mm shaft diameter and weighs 20 kilograms (44 lbs.)

It’s rated for 1,000 lbs and has 16.5″ of loadable sleeve length (where the weight plates go.)

Rep Sabre Bar
The Rep Sabre Bar is a general purpose bar. Use it for powerlifts (squat, bench, deadlift) or Olympic lifting (snatch, clean and jerk.)

Here’s the vital specs.

A Women’s version is available that is only 25mm in diameter – and is therefore easier to grip for those with smaller hands.

(The Women’s version is also shorter – so you can’t load as much weight on the sleeves – there is just not as much room.)

The Sabre Bar is available with or without center knurl. We recommend center knurl if you are going to back squat a lot with the bar. If you mostly front squat, or lift Olympic style it can be a hindrance though.

Rep Sabre Bar specs
Available with or without center knurl, and also in a women’s version that weighs only 15kg.

The Sabre Bar has a zinc coating and 1 year warranty.

This would be a good barbell for CrossFit use – which often requires power lifting (squat, deadlift) and some amount of Olympic lifting.

Please note that this is a bushing bar.

The rotating sleeves use bronze bushings.

It will spin – but not as much as a “bearing” bar (we’ll look at those soon.)

Spin is important for Olympic lifting – but not as much for powerlifting. A bushing bar is plenty fine for power lifts.

Rep Sabre Bar
The Rep Sabre Bar in use

How does the Sabre Bar compare to the Basic Barbell? The Sabre Bar is a BIG step up in versatility for not that much more money.

It’s also available in a black zinc version – for slightly more money.

Rep Sabre Bar with Black Zinc finish - looks nice!

Let’s look at a bar that is specialized for the Olympic lifts.

Gladiator WL Bearing Bar

The Gladiator WL Bearing Bar is specialized for Olympic lifting.

How so? It’s a bearing bar. That means that needles bearings are used (along with bushings) to ensure a super-smooth spin of the sleeves.

And that helps a lot with Olympic lifting.

Gladiator WL Bearing Bar
A bearing bar uses needle bearings to ensure very smooth spin of the sleeves. This bar also has great whip that is desirable for Olympic lifting.

Secondly, this bar has the amount of “whip” you want in Olympic lifting.

Stiffer bars that are specialized for powerlifting don’t have this – as you don’t want whip when you are squatting and benching.

The Gladiator bar is 20 kilogram (44lbs) and has a 28 mm shaft diameter.

The knurl is “medium” – so you can get a grip and keep it – but it won’t shred your hands.

The Gladiator is also available in a Women’s version – 15 kg, 25 mm diameter, etc.

The Gladiator bar has a hard chrome coating all over – and this will be significantly more rust-resistant as compared to the zinc coating used in the other bars.

Hard chrome is great too because it’s highly resistant to scratches and wear and tear.

Gladiator bar uses hard chrome

Like to Olympic lift? If so, this bar is definitely your choice.

Of course you can use it for heavy powerlifting too – just remember it has whip that might be detrimental.

But, unless you are lifting very heavy weights – it probably won’t matter.

If you want less whip – there’s also a 28.5 mm shaft diameter version. That little bit of added diameter will cut down the whip considerably.

I will say I personally find Olympic lifting much, much more enjoyable on a good bearing bar (as compared to a bushing bar.)

Stainless Steel Gladiator WL Bar

Want the ultimate weightlifting bar from Rep?

The Gladiator bar is available in an all stainless steel version.

This offers great bare metal feel (there’s no coating) – but still offers awesome oxidation and rust resistance.

Of course, it’s more expensive – because of the materials used.

Gladiator bar in stainless steel

Besides being made from Stainless Steel, it has all the same features as the regular Gladiator bar.

28 mm diameter, needle bearings and bushings, 16″ loadable sleeve length, 20 Kg weight, etc.

The weight limit on this bar is 1,500 lbs. Not that you need that …

What do I recommend?

I’m in Florida – in a garage gym with no A/C.

I always get stainless steel whenever I can.

It’ll be worth it when the bar is looking great years from now…

Gladiator WL Bar in Stainless specs

Let’s look at one more specialized bar before we wrap up.

Rep Stainless Steel Power Bar V2

The Stainless Steel Power Bar v2 is meant for serious powerlifting.

Rep Power Bar Stainless Steel

In powerlifting, you don’t want any whip.

So this bar uses stiff stainless steel with a 29mm shaft diameter.

It also has a center knurl – to keep the bar firmly in place on your back.

This is especially helpful for the style of squat often used in powerlifting – the “low bar” squat.

It uses bushings – because there is no benefit to having bearing bar levels of spin for the power lifts.

Rep Stainless Steel Power Bar Specs

Barbells from Rep Fitness – In Summary

Barbells are the primary tool of the weightlifter.

A good Olympic sized barbell can be used for a variety of exercises with lots of heavy weight.

And that is the most effective tool for building strength or muscle.

Some bars are specialized for heavy powerlifting (“power bars”) while others are specialized for the quick lifts of Olympic weightlifting – the clean and jerk and snatch.

But, there are bars that offer a compromise – and these sort of general purpose bars might be the best choice for your home gym or garage gym.

Which one should you snag on Black Friday or Cyber Monday? We’d go bearing bar if you want to specialize in the Olympic Lifts, and bushing/general purpose bar for CrossFit and Powerlifting.

Got bench?

A complete garage gym or home gym needs a good weight bench.

And, if it is for your home gym – make it versatile – as you won’t want to waste the space on a separate flat and incline bench.

You can even get a bench that does all 3 things: a Flat/Incline/Decline bench – otherwise known as a FID bench.

Rep AB-5000 Zero Gap bench
Rep AB-5000 Zero Gap bench – a FID bench that does it all – Flat, Incline, or Decline.

Shown above is the Rep Fitness AB-5000 FID Bench from Rep Fitness.

This bench does it all – Flat, Incline, or Decline – plus it has wheels for easy re-positioning.

Best of all, it’s bargain priced for what it is.

FB-3000 Flat Bench from Rep Fitness

Our starting point is the FB-3000 Flat Bench from Rep Fitness.

This is as simple as simple gets – it is a flat bench, 17.5" tall and 12" wide – which is typical for a flat bench.

FB-3000 Flat Bench specifications

It’s made from 11 gauge steel and will support up to 1,000 lbs.

(Which is probably more than you need.)

What can you do with the FB-3000? All kinds of stuff – benching of course, but things like dumbbell rows, and more are also a great idea.

One of the things we like the most about this Rep bench – it’s available in a choice of colors.

It is nice to be able to customize your own workout space.

FB-3000 Flat Bench from Rep comes in a variety of colors.

The FB-3000 will get the job done, but if you step up to the next model of bench – you’ll get some nice extra features.

FB-4000 Comp Lite Bench from Rep

For just a little bit more money – you can get a much nicer bench like the FB-4000 Comp Lite Bench.

What’s so great about it?

First, it’s a solid 14 gauge steel flat bench with a 700 lb weight rating – which is probably enough for most people.

It’s a 3-post design – so there’s no support feet to get in the way of your bench stance.

It also has a handle and wheels for easy re-positioning.

Here’s another killer feature – you can stand this up on the wheeled side for vertical storage.

This is a huge space saving feature for your home or garage gym.

A serious competition and training bench needs a wide pad option – and Rep has it.

A wide pad gives you better scapular positioning – and the extra width is especially helpful for bigger guys.

That’s all we have for flat benches (isn’t that enough?)

Let’s look at adjustable benches next.

AB-3100 Adjustable Bench from Rep

For adjustable benches, we’ll start with the simplest option.

The AB-3100 Adjustable Bench from Rep does both flat and incline positions.

It has 6 back pad adjustments, from flat to 85 degree incline, and 3 seat pad adjustments, from flat to incline.

It is rated for 1,000 lbs maximum capacity.

AB-3100 Adjustable Bench
Want a simple, but robust, bench that can do incline and flat? The AB-3100 is a great option.

As with many of Rep’s products – it is available in a variety of colors.

One thing to note about this bench: there is a 2″ pad gap when it’s in the flat position.

This is because that is where the hinge is for the adjustments.

AB-3100 Adjustable Bench set Flat
There is a small pad gap when the bench is in the flat position.

We’ll look at one more adjustable bench that does incline and flat.

AB-5200 Adjustable Bench from Rep

The AB-5200 Adjustable Bench from Rep is their beefiest flat and incline bench.

It has many of the features you expect from Rep: 1,000 lb rating, wheels, flat and incline positions, and more.

This bench can be stored vertically – for space savings when you aren’t using it.

When stored this way the floor footprint is only 2.8 feet.

Next, we’ll look at a bench that does Flat, Incline, AND Decline.

AB-3000 Adjustable FID Bench from Rep

The first FID bench we have is the AB-3000 Adjustable FID Bench.

This is a FID bench – it does Flat, Incline, and Decline.

There are 7 adjustable positions – and it supports 1,000 lbs.

The AB-3000 Adjustable Bench has 7 adjustable positions
Here’s some of the adjustable positions of the Rep AB-3000 bench.

Decline is probably the position you’ll use the least.

But, decline is great for ab exercises.

Rep AB-5000 ZERO GAP FID Bench

We’re going to jump right to Rep’s most advanced and versatile adjustable bench.

The AB-5000 Zero Gap Adjustable Bench is a 1,000 lbs rated FID bench (Flat/Incline/Decline).

But, it has a patented feature to reduce the pad gap to ZERO when in flat bench mode.

Rep AB-5000
7 back adjustments and 4 seat positions make this a versatile bench.

It also has wheels and a handle for easy positioning.

An optional (extra cost) leg roller unit let’s you do extreme decline ab exercises.

Rep Fitness AB-5000 FID bench ZERO GAP
With the optional leg roller support you can do extreme decline exercise on the AB-5000.

This is a really beefy bench – it is made from 11 gauge steel and weighs over 100 lbs!

Here you can see the pad gap adjusted to zero in flat bench position.

The pad gap can be adjusted away entirely when in flat bench mode – thanks to a patented feature.

Don’t care about the pad gap?

Rep sells a version of this bench that lacks that feature – it is called the Rep AB-5100 Adjustable Bench.

AB-5100
The AB-5100 bench has all the same great features as the AB-5000 – but does have a pad gap.

As you can see, the pad gap isn’t that big of a deal – in my opinion.

Rep AB-5100 Adjustable Bench
When using as a flat bench there’s a 2" pad gap – but it’s not a big deal.

You can save some money by getting the AB-5100 instead of the AB-5000.

Weight Benches from Rep Fitness – In Summary

A weight bench is an essential for a home gym or garage gym.

It let’s you add a variety of exercises to your routine, including the bench press, dumbbell rows, and many more.

The three major kinds of bench are the: flat bench, incline bench, and decline bench.

Some benches are adjustable to cover all those needs – these are known as FID (Flat/Incline/Decline) benches

Lastly, there are some great features to look for on your home gym bench – wheels for easy re-positioning and vertical storage are just two examples.

We expect they’ll have all of their popular models on sale for Black Friday 2019 – and that includes Cyber Monday 2019 too.

Bumper plates are the most versatile Olympic sized plates you can use in your home gym or garage gym.

These plates are made from rubber (or other materials) that allow you to safely drop them from overhead.

They are quiet, durable, and can be used for the slow strength lifts – but they are a necessity for the quick Olympic lifts.

You need bumper plates to do Oly lifting right.
You really need bumper plates to do Oly lifting right.

If you are interested in the Oly lifting – you need bumper plates.

It’s simply too much hassle to have to lower steel plates under control – it’s a waste of energy.

Given that, we recommend bumper plates for your garage gym.

The downside is that bumper plates are significantly more expensive than steel plates – and harder to find.

Finding quality plates locally can be tough – but there are plenty of options on-line.

Rep Fitness has a range of bumper plate options – and we’ll look at those in this article.

Here’s the high quality bumper plates from Rep Fitness we’ll review in this article:

Rep Black Bumper Plates Rep's Black Bumper Plates are made from low bounce virgin rubber. They also include a zinc coated steel insert. Available in sizes from 10 lbs to 45 lbs. These are not available in kilos.
Rep Color Bumper Plates Color Bumper Plates let you quickly verify the weight loading. These color bumper plates look good, and work well. Except for the coloring, they are the same as the Black Bumper Plates (lbs only - no kilos.)
Rep Color Competition Plates (Lbs) Step your game up with competition plates - these are precisely manufactured and are within +/- 10 grams of the advertised weight. They are also thinner than the training bumpers, thanks to the bigger steel insert, and the use of very low bounce virgin rubber (92 durometer rating.) But, they do cost significantly more.
Rep Color Competition Plates (Kilos) These competition plates come in kilograms - to remain true to Olympic weightlifting tradition. Otherwise they are the same as the competition plates in lbs.

Let’s take a closer look at these great plates from Rep.

Competition Plates like the Rep Competition Bumper Plates (Lbs) are precision manufactured.

Competition Bumper Plates
Competition Bumper Plates are manufactured to precise quality standards.

To be used in competition – they must meet strict quality standards set by the IWF (International Weightlifting Federation.)

Rep Competition Bumper Plates - Lbs
Competition plates must be color-coded – so it is easy to confirm the proper weight loading.

These are within +/- 10 grams of the claimed weight.

They are 450 mm in diameter.

Are these over-kill for a home gym?

Yes, but they are very high quality.

Competition plates
Competition bumper plates – overkill for a home gym – but don’t they look sweet?

There are some reasons to use them.

Thanks to the very beefy steel insert these are significantly thinner than the training bumper plates we covered earlier.

That means you can fit more of them on the barbell.

Secondly, these have a 92 durometer rating – which means they are “very low bounce.”

Competition Bumper Plates from Rep (Kilos)

Oly lifting with plates marked in lbs? Blasphemy!

Keep things legit with the Competition Plates (Kilos).

These have all the same attributes of the other competition plates, but are marked in kilos.

The plates used for Olympic lifting are normally in kilo denominations. CrossFit tends to use pounds regardless though.

Bumper Plates from Rep Fitness – In Summary

Bumper plates are not a necessity for power lifting.

But they are a necessity for Oly lifting.

Because the snatch and clean and jerk end with the bar overhead – you can safely drop it without damaging your bar.

Bumper plates are more expensive – and harder to find.

But, they are quieter to use in most situations, and they look really nice.
